How does variation in genes generate the beautiful diversity of animal body shapes that fill the world? UCSD Biologist William McGinnis explains that all animals, whether fish, fowl, or fly, share similar architectural control genes called Homeobox genes. The discovery and study of these genes has led to an understanding of how subtle changes in Homeobox genes can lead to changes in animal form during evolution. Series: "Evolution Matters" [2/2008] [Science] [Show ID: 13545]

the guys' chicken is becoming a rooster. Phoebe undergoes the procedure to implant embryos in her uterus; the pressure is high as Frank Jr. and Alice can only afford the procedure once. Monica and Rachel bet that they know Chandler and Joey better than Chandler and Joey know them; Ross writes the questions (game show style) and eventually the stakes are raised: If the girls win, the chick and the duck have to go. If the guys win, they get the girls' apartment.

Even before Darwin, biologists recognized that species that looked quite different as adults often had close similarities as developing embryos. Many four -- legged animals go through embryonic stages that have similar features -- gill arches, a notochord, segmentation, and paddle-like limb buds -- as they develop into different adults. To Darwin, the embryonic resemblances were strong support for the theory of evolution. One of Darwin's contemporaries, German biologist Ernst Haeckel, summed up the argument in a famous, pithy statement: "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny." That is to say, in the process of development, an individual passes through the adult forms of all its ancestors. So, Haeckel proposed, by examining the development of an embryo you could read its entire evolutionary history in the transition from one stage to another. In fact, this isn't strictly true, and the drawings Haeckel made exaggerated the embryonic similarities between species.

Women are having children much later in life, therefore, they are freezing embryos. It is a really strange concept for me. Also, since breastfeeding is such a big topic here on YT I have been pondering what my maternal Grandmother would have went through because she had 13 children. This also brings me into an old breastfeeding rocking chair that I own from the 1800's. Some people do not like owning things that dead people have used. Well, I don't like owning furniture that has to be assembled from a box. Also, these antiques will appreciate because they are a collectible item. Listen to the whole video and you will find out what is going to be the most collectible item.

Developing eggs of a Lymneae snail. These were laid by some pet snails of mine. I removed the eggs because the snails live in a medium/small clear plastic deli-cup and the eggs, if allowed to hatch, would have likely led to a fowling of the water (& thus the likely demise of the plants & eventually the snails. It happened once before when they were in a large plastic animal tank, but I disposed of the contents of the tank before the adult snails died too. They're now healthy & happy in their new, if much smaller, home.) The eggs are, for the mean time, in a plastic petri dish of water. I took a few & placed them under my slide microscope to see the embryos inside. What I saw was what you see here (taken using my digital camera*). The embryos are either in or just past their 'trochophore' (pronounced 'trock-oh-fore') stage of development. It's this embryonic stage that links the mollusks together with the annelids (earthworms, leeches, and their kin), who also have this developmental stage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trochophore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lophotrochozoa Sorry but I forget what magnification this was on at the time. :C *All I did to film this was place the lens of my camera up to the eye-piece of the microscope (the camera flash must be turned off for photographs). That simple!
