"Envy" is the seventeenth single release by Northern Irish band Ash. The song was one of two new songs on their compilation album Intergalactic Sonic 7″s released in September 2002. The singles itself reached number 21 on the UK singles chart when released in August 2002. The music video featured Andy Dick driving a taxi cab screaming at the band to get out of his cab.
Envy was debuted at a low key gig at London's Water Rats in March 2000, and played again in July 2000 at London Docklands 'Lost Weekend Festival'. The track vanished for a while and wasn't recorded or included on the bands third album 'Free All Angels'. The band eventually recorded it in New York in 2002, with Manics producer Dave Eringa, the track was released as a single in the UK but won't appear on album number four.
Review: It ignites with a good ol' '1-2-3-4' from windsome Wheeler, and the tune just breezes through with a cocky we-can-write-this-shit-in-our-sleep swagger. And it's catchy as fuck. Then, just when the chorus has completely eaten away at your mind, the gushing girly backing vox waft into hammer it home, just in case, for some stupid reason, your digested grey matter hadn't yet totally succumbed to the hum-along epidemic that this is damnable track. 'Too much, too much' spurts Tim towards the end, a no-doubt mischievous and pseudo-cheesy observational ad-lib of his own work. And he's absolutely right.
