Here's what tourists are saying about beautiful Asmara, Eritrea. ------ The capital of newly independent Eritrea, Asmara is one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in the whole of Africa, if not anywhere in the World. Situated at an elevation of 2400 metres above sea-level, its climate is pleasantly cool, but also dry and sunny for much of the year. Architecturally, it is a real feast for the eyes. Having been the centre of Italian colonial efforts in Africa in the first part of the 20th century, Asmara was blessed with beautiful buildings that would only draw praise in Italy as well. Even after the Italians were gone, the city has managed to escape the raveges of third world development, and has amazingly even survived the wars with Ethiopia intact. Current government policies also prevent it from become yet another sprawling, polluted African capital ringed with slums. Not only is Asmara beautiful, clean and pleasantly cool, it is also a very safe and relaxed city, where one can walk around at any time of the day or night without having to worry about safety, or even more minor hassles like beggars. The locals are a very cultured lot who seem to pride themselves on their city's Italian heritage, fondly call it "Little Rome", and cafeterias and pizzerias do a roaring trade along the city's main avenue. And in case you start wondering whether all this comes at a price, you might be delighted to hear that Asmara is also among the cheapest capitals in the continent! Not surprisingly, this is one of the few places that visitors almost invariably fall in love with instantly. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2e789/1ebe77/ ======== If there is a country that has ever deserved the overused titles like "hidden gem" or "overlooked jewel", Eritrea is it. The mere name of this country along the Red Sea coast of East Africa tends to provoke blank looks from most people: "Eritrea??? What... err... where is it, actually???" History is partly to blame for sure. Under foreign occupation for centuries, Eritrea only appeared on the maps as an independent country in 1993, when its people have voted for leaving Ethiopia after decades of armed struggle. And ever since then, it has only hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. So that is why Eritrea is largely unknown to the World, but what makes it a gem? First and foremost, its capital Asmara is the single most beautiful city in Africa, and an ethernal favourite of all those who have been there. Its history as an Italian colonial town has blessed it with an architectural legacy that would draw praise even in Europe. Beautiful buildings apart, the Italians have also left behind their impact on the local culture: cafeterias, pizzerias and fashionably dressed locals (including Africa's most beautiful women) make you feel far removed from the hectic, poverty-stricken and polluted cities of the rest of the continent. To further ensure a pleasant stay, Asmara's climate is as pleasant as it gets, with cool, dry, sunny weather throughout the year. Wishing for something more exotic? Asmara may feel like a piece of Italy, but out in the country you will find an amalgam of African cultures at their best. The highland plateu of southern Eritrea shares the ancient Orthodox Christian traditions of neighbouring Ethiopia, the peoples inhabiting the deserts to the west and along the Red Sea coast exhibit Muslim culture at its most colorful, while animistic, tribal Africa is represented by the Kunama and Nara of the south-west. The landscapes range from lush, cool highlands to the hottest, most desolate deserts anywhere, towns and villages exhibit a curious mixture of traditionally African and Mediterranian influences, and wildlife, while nowhere nearly as abundant as in Kenya or Tanzania, is varied and includes many rare species. Nevertheless, what really gives a lasting impression of Eritrea is her people. Eritreans are among the most educated, dignified and hospitable people I have met anywhere, and the begging, thievery and hassles encountered elsewhere in Africa quickly fade into distant memories here. I visited Eritrea in 2004, as part of a three-month-long tour of North-East Africa, that also took me to neighbouring Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti and Somaliland. Due to Eritrea's relationship with these neighbours getting here required quite an amount of persistance and determination, but once I arrived, I felt it was all worth it. Eritrea has immediately became my favourite country in Africa, and I can only wish to return for a longer stay in the future. If you are at all thinking about visiting this country, think no more - go! In A Nutshell: "My favourite country in Africa!" http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2e789/e04/

Eritrea was awarded to Ethiopia in 1952 as part of a federation. Ethiopia's annexation of Eritrea as a province 10 years later sparked a 30-year struggle for independence that ended in 1991 with Eritrean rebels defeating governmental forces; independence was overwhelmingly approved in a 1993 referendum. A two-and-a-half-year border war with Ethiopia that erupted in 1998 ended under UN auspices in December 2000. Eritrea currently hosts a UN peacekeeping operation that is monitoring a 25 km-wide Temporary Security Zone on the border with Ethiopia. An international commission, organized to resolve the border dispute, posted its findings in 2002. However, both parties have been unable to reach agreement on implementing the decision. In November 2006, the international commission informed Eritrea and Ethiopia they had one year to demarcate the border or the border demarcation would be based on coordinates. unicameral National Assembly (150 seats; members elected by direct popular vote to serve five-year terms) elections: in May 1997, following the adoption of the new constitution, 75 members of the PFDJ Central Committee (the old Central Committee of the EPLF), 60 members of the 527-member Constituent Assembly, which had been established in 1997 to discuss and ratify the new constitution, and 15 representatives of Eritreans living abroad were formed into a Transitional National Assembly to serve as the country's legislative body until countrywide elections to a National Assembly were held; although only 75 of 150 members of the Transitional National Assembly were elected, the constitution stipulates that once past the transition stage, all members of the National Assembly will be elected by secret ballot of all eligible voters; National Assembly elections scheduled for December 2001 were postponed indefinitely. Since independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrea has faced the economic problems of a small, desperately poor country, accentuated by the recent implementation of restrictive economic policies. Eritrea has a command economy under the control of the sole political party, the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). Like the economies of many African nations, the economy is largely based on subsistence agriculture, with 80% of the population involved in farming and herding. The Ethiopian-Eritrea war in 1998-2000 severely hurt Eritrea's economy. GDP growth fell to zero in 1999 and to -12.1% in 2000. The May 2000 Ethiopian offensive into northern Eritrea caused some $600 million in property damage and loss, including losses of $225 million in livestock and 55,000 homes. The attack prevented planting of crops in Eritrea's most productive region, causing food production to drop by 62%. Even during the war, Eritrea developed its transportation infrastructure, asphalting new roads, improving its ports, and repairing war-damaged roads and bridges. Since the war ended, the government has maintained a firm grip on the economy, expanding the use of the military and party-owned businesses to complete Eritrea's development agenda. In January 2005, the government essentially banned all imports. The government strictly controls the use of foreign currency, limiting access and availability. Few private enterprises remain in Eritrea. Eritrea's economy is heavily dependent on taxes paid by members of the diaspora. Erratic rainfall and the delayed demobilization of agriculturalists from the military continue to interfere with agricultural production, and Eritrea's recent harvests have not been able to meet the food needs of the country. Eritrea's economic future depends upon its ability to master social problems such as illiteracy, unemployment, and low skills, and more importantly, on the government's willingness to support a true market economy. 6 regions (zobatat, singular - zoba); Anseba, Debub (Southern), Debubawi K'eyih Bahri (Southern Red Sea), Gash Barka, Ma'akel (Central), Semenawi Keyih Bahri (Northern Red Sea). https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/er.html

Did you know that more tourist (410,000 of them) visit Eritrea each year than all of Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and djibouti combined?? Eritrea's Capital city of Asmara: Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, bordering the Red Sea, is referred by many expert travelers as the beautifulest city in Africa and is also home to one of the most important and exciting architectural 'discoveries' of recent years. Built almost entirely in the 1930s and early 40's by Italian and Eritrean workers, Asmara has one of the highest concentrations of modernist architecture anywhere in the world, and has evocatively been described as "the Miami of Africa." Desperate to build quickly, the colonial government of the time allowed radical architectural experimentation that would not have found favour in the more conservative European environment. Asmara therefore became one of the world's prime locations for architectural innovation during the Modern Movement. That this occurred at all is remarkable enough, but that these buildings should have survived in such numbers today makes it one of the finest modernist cities in the World. Eritrea's unique natural features: i. April 1996 Antiquated, iron trains have stood abandoned for 20 years during Eritrea's war with Ethiopia. Now an army of veteran rail workers and their new apprentices are coaxing them back to life. The Eritrean people are determined to reconstruct their dilapidated railway without any outside help. In the hot, dusty hills, they rescue the old rails from bunkers used during the war. All 169,000 steel sleepers have to be dug up from the ground, straightened and hauled back to the original track. They aim to complete 120 km of track, snaking from the coast to the capital. Transport Minister, Giorgis Teklemikael, says Eritrea's self-reliance and 'can do' philosophy will prevail. A train operating between Massawa and its suburbs is the first sign of success.

Cycling Tour of Eritrea 2008 has uncorked on Friday 11th April 2008 with 117 km road race and Abrham Belay from Debub zone has become stage one winner while Gigante Cycling Team leading the race in the first day of the race. The national race will continue up until Sunday 20th April for 9 grueling stages with only a day off after five consecutive races. The tour will cover a total distance of 1178 km with an overall 11 climbing contests. More than 100 riders are taking part at the tour that is being held for its 8th time consecutively. An overall 276,700 Nakfa prize money is at stake for individual and team winners. The participation of representative teams from each zonal administration makes this tour first of its kind. According to the President of Eritrean National Cycling Federation Mr. Mengesteab Tekie, a UCI representative is on her way to witness Tour of Eritrea for the first time. This is expected to help acknowledge the standard of the national tour competition as an international race recognized under the rules and regulations of the UCI. This is surly the result of the finely honed riders who have been busy registering overlapping victories in different kinds of international competitions in Nairobi (Kenya), Algiers (Algeria), Yaounde (Cameroon) and in different cities of Ivory Coast. Promising Eritrean riders like Daniel Teclehaimanot, Merhawi Gebrhiwot, Frekalsi Debesay, Dawit Haile and others have been bringing exceptional victories to their home country since their inclusion to the national team every time they participate in different international competitions in the past one year and three months. In December 2006, Eritrea excelled in international cycling races at ANOCA competition held in Nairobi, Kenya where Daniel won golden medal in the opening time-trial race. Eritrea stood first with overall two gold, silver and bronze medals in the two days race. The Eritrean National Cycling team in Algiers 2007 All Africa Games was on the podium in almost all kinds of prize ceremonies. The team secured its place to win gold medal as best African team of the competition. Individually, Frekalsi Debesay was adorned a historic All Africa Games bronze medal which is first of its kind to Eritrea after Independence. Merhawi Gebrhiwot stood 5th as Dawit Haile and Daniel Teclehaimanot squeezed themselves within the list of top 10 winners, claiming 9th and 10th place. At that moment, Eritrea topped the continent with an overall cycling result both in the junior and senior level, which handed the country unbelievably great honor. It is to be recalled that during the colonial era Tekeste (Gigante) had won gold medal in All Africa Games time-trial competition back in 1970s in Nigeria. In November 2007, Eritrean cycling national team took part at the African Continental Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon where about 17 strong African national teams with some professional riders participated. Bereket Yemane pedaled at a speed of 37.762 km/hr to cover a 22 km time-trial competition. He stood 3rd and climbed on the podium with bronze medal. Frekalsi Debesay followed him for a 4th standing pushing 37.273 km/hr as Daniel Teclehaimanot stood 5th pedaling 36.483 km/hr. What is more! Looking at this mammoth performance, the Eritrean National Cycling Team received an invitation from the Ivorian Cycling Federation to participate in a prolific Ivorian Tour competition from March 6th to 12th, 2008 where 5 strong European teams and 9 African National teams appeared. Eritrean riders once again were the icing cover to the cream standing ahead of all the other African national teams. Heroic Daniel Teclehaimanot individually outclassed all African riders. Beaten by four European teams, the Eritrean National team took an overall 5th standing. Top of Africans Daniel, on his turn, beaten only by 37 seconds ranked 5th standing behind three French and one Italian riders. Just one month after this particular competition, our top riders are engaged in the on going another enjoyable but hectic competition -- Tour of Eritrea 2008. The American funded and Russian armed Ethiopian military doubled the size of its armed forces to fight in the 1998-2000 war against Eritrea, mobilizing some 250,000 men. Casualty figures reached a massive number of 123,000 Ethiopian soldiers killed, principally in the two major assaults in February-June 1999 and May-June 2000. While Eritrea sustaind 19,000 casualties in combat. The final result of the border war came in a court room, where Eritrea was rewarded Badme, (the small town alegidly the war started over) in which Ethopian leaders signed agreeing to the court's rulling but yet have done nothing to keep their end of the bargin. Military experts believe another war may very well brake out do to Ethiopia's carelessness and bitterness towards its smaller, yet, stronger militarily neighbor of Eritrea.
