JUDY GARLAND "GET HAPPY" Though it's called Summer Stock, this marvelous "let's put on a show" musical - the final one that showcased the peerless pair of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly - is a delight for all seasons. The story is simple: a homespun farm family allows a Broadway production company to rehearse its new show on their property - if the performers "pay" their way by pitching in with all the farm chores! But the pleasures are abundant: a show-stopping, all-star "Battle of the Dances" that starts out as a square dance and blossoms into a cavalcade of high-stepping dance favorites; Kelly's marvelous song and later dance to "You, Wonderful You;" four of the most popular comedic screen actors ever: Phil Silvers, Eddie Bracken, Hans Conried and Marjorie Main; and Garland's incomparable "Get Happy," a smashing sequence that's one of her peak movie moments.

A powerhouse packed into a 4' 11" (151 cm) frame, Judy Garland shot to stardom at 17 with "The Wizard of Oz". She and Mickey Rooney went on to star in 9 movies aimed at teen audience. The cute little girl in this video is her daughter Liza Minnelli. Ms. Garland's tumultuous life with drugs is well documented, and at the age of 47 she died of drug overdose. The soundtrack, "You Go To My Head" by Judy Garland, is a live recording at Carnegie Hall in 1961. NOTE: Since it's a live recording, if you listen closely, Ms. Garland forgot the lyrics about 57 seconds into the video, and, in a hilarious ad-lib, sang "with...and I forgot the god-darn words...(garbled)." The actual lyrics, which she later remembered, are "with a smile that makes my temperature rise, like a summer with a thousand Julys."

From the episode of March 5, 1967, near the end of Judy's life. This old film is a bit grainy, scratchy and dusty, but it's interesting to look at. If Judy were alive today, she'd be 85 years old. Her co-star Mickey Rooney is 87.

Miami Beach was recorded in 1980 in London with the great LINTON KWESI JOHNSON as the narrator, reading the news from the Miami Herald. I went to the UK to record this one and worked with the great dubmaster Dennis Bovell and his musicians. We achieved the exact result we wanted. Linton read my clipping and the sound of his voice and mine did the talking. Best Wishes, Garland Jeffreys Miami Beach Music & Lyrics by Garland Jeffreys I was walkin' Miami Beach I was feelin' so out of reach It was not like the European nights It was not like the Broadway lights They like-a-separate-a-Black from a-Whites They like-a-separate-a Black from his rights I was feelin' so out of touch I don't like this place very much Walkin' down the road in the boilin' heat The Miami sun in the middle of the street See a cop with a club and a gun The man say he no hurt anyone He lies through his teeth With a smilin' face He cries to the judge and They close up the case Now 'ya know this a real and a-true ya' know What ya' gonna feel and do I was walkin' down the road in the blistering heat A bomb explode on a hot concrete It can happen in a broad daylight It can happen in the middle of the night Screech and a scream and a pistol shot It can't be a dream if it sounds like that It's a riot in a Liberty City A race riot such a down right pity Walkin' down the road one afternoon Feelin' upset no I'm not immune Let me tell you a story Another painful story What ya' think of a world like that A clicky lickle world like that What ya' think of a world like that A world full a' dread like that Think!!

~ALL~ Clang ,clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings as we started for Huntington Dell. Chug, chug, chug went the motor Bump, bump, bump went the brake Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings as we glided for Huntington Lake. The day was bright, the air was sweet The smell of honeysuckle charmed me off my feet I tried to sing, but couldn't squeak In fact I felt so good I couldn't even speak Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Time to all disembark, Time to fall went my heartstrings as we got off at Huntington Park As we got off at Huntington Park. ~Judy~ With my high-starched collar, and my high-topped shoes And my hair piled high upon my head I went to lose a jolly hour on the Trolley and lost my heart instead. With his light brown derby and his bright green tie He was quite the handsomest of men I started to yen, so I counted to ten the I counted to ten again Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings From the moment I saw him I fell Chug, chug, chug went the motor Bump, bump, bump went the brake Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings When he smiled I could feel the car shake He tipped his hat, and took a seat He said he hoped he hadn't stepped upon my feet He asked my name, I held my breath I couldn't speak because he scared me half to death Chug, chug, chug went the motor Plop, plop, plop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings As he started to go then I started to know how it feels When the universe reels ~All~ The day was bright, the air was sweet The smell of honeysuckle charmed you off youe feet You tried to sing, but couldn't squeaks In fact, you loved him so you couldn't even speak ~Judy~ Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Plop, plop, plop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings As he started to leave I took hold of his sleeve with my hand And as if it were planned he stay on with me And it was grand just to stand with his hand holding mine To the end of the line

Don't Call Me Buckwheat from my "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" album released in 1992. It's time to bury the 'N' word along with all the other racial slurs. I was inspired to write this song after a very upsetting moment: I was at Shea Stadium watching the Mets vs. Houston, Dwight Gooden vs. Nolan Ryan. I was sitting in foul territory in left field. I got up to get a few franks and soda for the guys, walking and watching the game and going down the steps, all at the same time. I was probably blocking the view of people--and one guy says, "Hey, Buckwheat! Get the f--k out of here, Buckwheat!" I had never heard the word used before like that; I was shocked. I turned around and I was just frozen. I kept walking and I was on line and feeling really uncomfortable. I said, "Don't call me Buckwheat" to myself, and I went home and wrote the song. It just brought back my whole childhood, all the name calling. I grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn in a very mixed-race community: Jews, Irish, Blacks, Italians and Spanish, K--s, M--ks, N-----s, W--s and sp--s. You heard those words a lot. I would cringe when I heard the "n------" word and I still do. The whole usage of it today in rap disturbs me to no end. Kids don't know the real meaning and how it feels to hear it. It got to the point where you knew you'd hear it almost every day from someone. Garland Jeffreys http://www.facebook.com/pages/Garland-Jeffreys/10650433053 P.S. I'm working on a new album and will begin a world tour in 2009 that will take me through the USA, Canada, all over Europe, Australia and parts of Asia.
