Israel "Bruddah Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole (20-5-1959/26-6-1997) fue un popular cantante hawaiano. Conocido como Iz, se dio a conocer fuera de Hawái cuando su disco Facing Future salió a la venta en 1993 incluyendo su potpourri mezclando los clásicos "Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World". Su combinación de estas canciones ha sido parte del arreglo musical de varias películas, entre las que se cuentan, Descubriendo a Forrester, ¿Conoces a Joe Black?, 50 primeras citas.
Nació en 1959 en la isla Oahu. Fue criado en la comunidad Kaimuki en las afueras de Waikīkī donde sus padres vivían. A los 11 años empezó a tocar instrumentos musicales junto con su hermano mayor Skippy.
Durante su adolescencia, su familia se mudó a Makaha. Allí conoció a Louis "Moon" Kauakahi, Sam Gray y Jerome Koko quienes junto con su hermano Skippy formaron el grupo Hijos Makaha de Ni'ihau.
Poco a poco desde 1976 y a lo largo de los 80, el grupo fue ganando popularidad en Hawái y en el resto de los Estados Unidos.
En 1982 Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole, hermano de Iz, falleció de un ataque cardíaco. Ese mismo año Iz se casó con su novia de la adolescencia Marlene y al poco tiempo tuvieron una hija a quien llamaron Ceslieanne "Wehi"
En 1990, Iz lanzó su primer álbum como solista Ka'ano'i el cual le valió para ganar varios premios en Hawái. Facing Future fue lanzado en 1993, siendo generalmente considerado como su mejor trabajo. El álbum incluye además de "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World", su canción más popular, "Hawai'i 78," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man," y "Kaulana Kawaihae".
Al avanzar su carrera, Iz se fue caracterizando por promover los valores y la cultura de Hawái, así como el movimiento independentista, a través de sus canciones.
En 1997, Iz fue honrado por la Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts en la ceremonia anual de los premios Na Hoku Hanohano en cuatro de las más importantes categorías, entre ellas mejor cantante y mejor álbum. Iz no pudo asistir a la ceremonia y vio el evento desde su habitación en el hospital.
Durante la mayor parte de su vida adulta Iz fue obeso llegando a pesar 340 kg. Fue hospitalizado en numerosas ocasiones, y murió afectado de problemas respiratorios derivados de su enorme peso el 26-6-1997 a los 38 años de edad. Su cuerpo fue velado en el edificio del Capitolio en Honolulu, con la bandera a media asta en los edificios estatales. Luego de cremado las cenizas de Iz fueron esparcidas en el océano frente a la playa de Makua.
Iz se distinguía por pertenecer a una casi desaparecida minoría que sólo tienen antecesores hawaianos nativos. Iz es recordado por su carácter siempre alegre y positivo, y por su amor a la tierra y al pueblo hawaiano.

He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993 with his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", which was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials.
Kamakawiwo'ole was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant" by his admirers. He was described as always cheerful and positive, and he was best known for his love of the land and of the people of Hawaii. Through his consummate ukulele playing and incorporation of other idioms (such as jazz and reggae), Iz remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music over the last 15 years.
Wiwo'ole means courage or courageous in the Hawaiian language. Kamaka may come from kanaka, which means man.
