Built a "letterpress" to print wedding stationary. Whether or not you technically call it "letterpress" is open to debate, but it does what I wanted it to do. There are several other videos on youtube that talk about letterpress in general and great websites like www.boxcarpress.com and www.briarpress.org for more information. My photopolymer plate came from the folks at Boxcar Press. Definitely some things I would do differently in the construction of my press, but overall I'm happy with how it worked and I thought some other people might be interested in it as well. If you have any suggestions for ways to improve it, let me know in the comments. So far I've just done "Save the Date" cards and I'm thinking of building a new, more reliable press for the actual invitations.

19th century letterpress printing of a newspaper with a stop cylinderpress and metal type. The press is a Perreau & Brault manufactured in the 1870s in Paris and she is part of the antique press collection of the MIAT in Gent, Belgium. This antique press was restored by a group of volunteers at the MIAT (Museum of Industrial Archaeology and Textile) and she was used here for the first time to print 1200 newspapers (double sided so 2400 impression) of the 'Bornemsche Gazet' of 1831 for the 'Eén' television program Fata Morgana of Sunday 22 July 2007. Some experimenting with a CNC router to create a block which can be used for letterpress or relief art printing on an iron handpress. This block is a 30cm x 50 cm panel of massive beech glued together from several smaller blocks. Cutting depth is 5 mm with a 60 degree V-bit.

The venerable firm of Mackenzie & Harris, established in 1915, is the oldest and largest type foundry for letterpress printers in the United States. Also known as M & H Type, it offers traditional lead typecasting and Monotype composition as well as hot metal fonts. This tour, part of an A&E Open Book show, takes viewers through the foundry and into the pressroom of Arion Press where the type is impressed into paper.
