NPM-DVD-112 - Nature Parks KRUGER NATIONAL PARK South Africa In 1898, a small area between Sabie and Crocodile River was designated as a National Wild Animal Reserve, thus making the Kruger National Park Africa's oldest animal sanctuary. It is 450 kilometres long and about 55 kilometres wide and is one of the largest animal parks in the world, with 147 animal species, over 500 bird varieties, and 114 different reptiles. The Kruger Park is divided into three areas. Whilst bush land and mopane trees form the northern half, the wide grass plains of the central region are home to a large number of wild animals. In the lush vegetation of the southern half, that consists mainly of acacia trees and bush land, is the preferred habitat of rhinos, hippos and many other wild animals. The elephant, rhino, African buffalo, lion and leopard make up the so-called 'Big Five' of the Kruger National Park and in spite of its dry climate there is an immense variety of plant life with a rich assortment of trees, bushes, grasses, ferns, climbers and herbaceous plants. Located on the southern bank of the Sabie Rive, the Skukuza Camp is the park's organisational centre and can accommodate over 1000 visitors. In 1902, this location was the base camp for the co-founder of the Kruger National Park, Colonel Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp is situated on the 'Lion Safari Road', one of the five most favoured routes for observing animals in the entire park, and a well maintained road network connects the park's 24 camps with the most interesting sights. On the edge of the park's winding sandy tracks there is often a chance encounter with a prowling hyena and the road itself is popular with rhinos and many other creatures that appear to be determined to be photographed by anxious tourists! The Kruger National Park that was once the Mecca of the Big Game Hunter is now an idyllic paradise of Nature and a veritable Noah's Ark for much of Africa's wildlife.

NPM-DVD-130 - Five hundred kilometres from Cape Town the surroundings of Knysna have for many years been the main tourist centre of this unique region, a breathtaking coastline, picturesque rivers and untouched forests which have given this magnificent area a unique and unforgettable charm. The Wilderness National Park begins just outside the village of Wilderness, west of Knysna. Because of its two thousand six hundred hectares the park has become an important refuge for many varieties of bird that are threatened by extinction. Located between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains it is an ideal refuge for two hundred and fifty different kinds of birds and small animals. The extraordinary beauty of Knysna Bay has many vantage points. Its eighteen square kilometre lagoon looks like a fantastic lake and the bay's most striking landmark is two mountains that rise up from the sea, the Heads Of Knysna which look like two gigantic stone heads and are the gateway into the lagoon. The Heads Of Knysna are responsible for the fact that over millions of years a biotope was gradually created here that is unique throughout South Africa. In this coastal area there is much vegetation and sclerophyllous plants and these rich natural treasures would alone be good enough reason to visit the Knysna region. The landscape on the section between George and Knysna is one of the finest in South Africa. The long railway bridge that spans the lagoon is a famous architectural landmark of this region and after two and a half hours the trains of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe arrive at Knysna Station. In Knysna it is possible to continue the journey by way of the many excursion boats and ferries that, when the weather is good, travel to the Heads and various islands. After having experienced the many wonderful natural sights of this magnificent region it is easy to understand why so many refer to it as, The Garden Of Eden, because, like paradise, there is no finer 'garden' than that of South Africa's Knysna!

NPM-DVD-138 - Around five kilometres beyond the city of Bharatpur is one of the most fascinating wildlife reserves on the Indian subcontinent, Keoladeo Ghana. Accompanied by the park's experienced guides, the first leg of our journey travels across a well-worn route to Python Point that, due to its population of Tiger Pythons, most assuredly lives up to its name. Despite the picturesque landscape the local maharajas were more interested in the region's wildlife, especially the population of wild duck In the middle of the 19th century the maharajahs recognized the merits of this newly created habitat and officially declared it to be their very own hunting grounds. Unlike today, the numerous water birds of Keoladeo Ghana were not protected but instead were hunted for sport. The park's varied scenery is quite remarkable. Low-lying forests, shrubberies, swampland and savannah-like grasslands influence the external appearance of this fascinating nature reserve. In the north east of the park the dry forests consist mainly of the babul tree, a unique variety of acacia tree, and rose apple. For many visitors the remoteness of the park is in stark contrast to life in India's lively, noisy and hectic cities. However, this world famous bird sanctuary is located close to civilization and also to a good network of roads. Yet motor vehicles are few and far between in Keoladeo Ghana where the bicycle rickshaw is the most common means of transport. Few bird sanctuaries in the world provide visitors with such a variety of bio-diversity and scenic beauty as does the Keoladeo National Park.

NPM-DVD-103 - Nature Parks CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS Canada CANADIAN ROCKY MOUNTAINS In Canada's Rocky Mountains, in the centre of the five largest National Parks in the world, lies the idyllic city of Jasper and a gigantic conservation area which covers 20,000 square kilometres, a large ecosystem in which the treasures of nature and the cultural roots of North America's Native Indians are cherished and preserved. The Jasper Tramway travels into the fantastic mountain world of the Rockies and the grandiose panorama from the summit of Mount Whistler gives an awesome first impression of this majestic mountain region. Whistler Road winds through fields of stones whose barren wastes are like those of a strange planet and the route opens up into a landscape which existed when the earth was in its infancy. Deep into the heart of this magical world the journey leads to the Icefield Parkway past huge forests with tracks leading nowhere, of which only the indigenous Indians and the woodland animals are familiar with the terrain. On a plain which extends 300 square kilometres, the Columbia Ice Fields includes Mount Columbia which rises 4,000 metres toward the heavens. Experienced mountain guides explain this wonder world of nature. Lake Louise is probably the most famous of Canada's mountain lakes and is located at the foot of the 3,464 meter tall Mount Victoria. The chateau Lake Louise was built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in1886. Far from civilisation and the hectic pace of city life, it offers a good level of service and comfortable accommodation. Canada's icy wilderness offers majestic mountains, deep green lakes and mighty glaciers and all the excitement and adventure of Nature's final frontier.

NPM-DVD-128 - Located in the north west of the U.S.A is Yellowstone, a national park of the superlative in which the impressive white water of Old Faithful is today one of the most famous and most photographed natural spectacles in the world. Indeed, for more than a century this mighty geyser has been the proud and unique landmark of the oldest national park in the United States. The Yellowstone National Park is famous for its highly visible geological processes. The area close to Old Faithful not only features a number of geysers but also numerous hot springs that highlight the tremendous thermal power that lies beneath the earth's surface. Today the Grand Geyser is the largest active geyser in the world. Its huge eruptions occur every eight to fourteen hours and last for nine to twelve minutes and can sometimes reach a height of sixty metres. The Yellowstone is one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Because it is located directly above a geological hot spot, a huge cave constantly fills with magma. It is situated at a depth of eight kilometres and is the reason for the park's visible geo-thermal activity. Some kilometres south of Nymph Lake is another geothermal area, the Norris Geyser Basin. This area is unique among the landscapes of Yellowstone Park as it is not only the park's hottest area but also boasts the largest geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser. Although Yellowstone National Park is important for North America's plant and wild life, this nine thousand square kilometre nature reserve is primarily a geological park. Amazing, fantastic, incredible and wonderful: how can you put into words a place that provides so many remarkable glimpses of the inner workings of Planet Earth?

NPM-DVD-140 - The Chobe region in the far north east of Botswana is well known for its fascinating nature. Its national park was named after the Chobe River one of the most important tributaries of the Zambesi that leads into the nearby world famous, Victoria Falls. The Chobe River acts as a central gateway to numerous villages as well as to the national park's various safari lodges. Unlike many other countries in Africa, tourism in Botswana attracts a particularly exclusive and well-off clientele. The advantages of this are soon apparent. As the number of tourists here is relatively small there is a far greater sense of freedom than in other parts of Africa. On the perimeter of Kasane, the largest city in this region, there are several luxurious lodges that are located along the banks of the river. Each of the safari lodges provides its own boat trips on the Chobe River and these can also be arranged to suit individual preferences. The river is ideal for the observation of wildlife and even by African standards the diversity of wildlife here is exceptional. One of the most spectacular attractions are huge herds of elephants as more than half the entire elephant population of Botswana lives in and around the Chobe National Park. Although their numbers fluctuate, around thirty five thousand to fifty thousand elephants live here making this the largest elephant enclosure in the world! Until relatively recently many White Tailed Eagles and Screaming Eagles were to be found along the Chobe River. However, they have now become quite scarce as many of them have been hunted. It is fortunate that some have made these areas of Botswana into their permanent habitat. The Chobe River is not only an exceptional body of water that flows through one of the most biodiverse regions in Africa, it is also a unique world full of natural wonder and captivating charm.

NPM-DVD-106 - Nature Parks ACADIA New England The Acadia National Park is located in the North Eastern region of Maine in the United States and measures 142 square kilometres The close proximity of the North Atlantic Ocean to the coastal forest landscape is one of the park's irresistible attractions. During fall, the season in which New England is at its most magnificent, the forests come alive with soft, warm colours and the entire landscape becomes transformed by this 'fifth season' of the year. Thunder Hole is a further attraction. Onlookers seem almost awe struck when witnessing the relentless might of the Atlantic and the unexpected sound of thunder that emanates from a small cave within the granite cliffs caused by the sea as it floods into the air-filled cave thus releasing the air pressure from within with fantastic, thunderous effect. Loop Road is a scenic route that travels from coast to countryside and passes a picturesque and charming semi-timbered house, the Jordan Pond Gate House, built by John D. Rockefeller in1932. Created from a glacier, Jordan Pond is relatively deep and at its northern end there are two round hills, the 'Bubbles' from the summit of which the vast landscape of the glowing forest below is even more impressive. Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the North Atlantic coast. The scant vegetation of this area is quite surprising especially as it is in such close proximity to the nearby forests. During September, when the first so-called 'leaf reports' are announced in the newspapers and on television, there's an air of excitement. The beginning of the Indian Summer is the time of the 'Leaf Peepers.' Whether they travel to the park by car, foot, horse and carriage or by way of a rented mountain bike, visitors to Acadia's beautiful forests have a wide selection of leaves from which to choose. During fall, the red and orange of the maple trees and the golden yellow hues of aspen and birch melt together in a breathtaking carpet of colour that seems to cover the entire country. Acadia is a veritable arcadia!

NPM-DVD-101 - Nature Parks AMBOSELI Kenya AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK With the 6,000m high Mount Kilimanjaro as its superb backdrop, Kenya's Amboseli National Park attracts visitors from all over the world. The 392 square kilometre park consists mainly of an extensive plain that was formerly Lake Amboseli. Today it is well known for its rich variety of animals, particularly elephants. The unmistakable acacias of the grass plains majestically dominate the scenery while, in contrast, the dehydrated remains of other trees appear as haunted and mysterious. The Amboseli Serena Lodge is located within a rainforest-type lush garden and is one of the most luxurious hotels in Kenya and meets the highest demands of the most sophisticated Safari traveller. Over 800 African elephants live within the park along with zebras, gnus, several varieties of antelope, hyenas, giraffe and over forty different birds of prey. Today, over 200,000 Maasai live in Kenya and many age-old traditions still play an important role in their everyday lives. Their percussive singing style and traditional dances are a very entertaining experience and by way of their rhythmic rituals they establish a tribal hierarchy. The only problem with the Amboseli National Park is deciding what is the more fascinating: the beauty of its wildlife or the splendour of the park itself!

NPM-DVD-139 - Majestic, thousand metre high rock walls flank a magnificent valley, the heart of the world famous Yosemite National Park located in California's Sierra Nevada. The first thing that strikes most visitors to the park is its spectacular waterfalls which. are the highest on the entire North American Continent and plunge down more than seven hundred metres. At Yosemite Falls the water from Yosemite Creek falls from the elevated regions of the Sierra Nevada down into the valley below. For several centuries, long before any white settlers reached the valleys of today's park, the area that surrounded the Merced River was the sole domain of the Native American Indian. For almost four thousand years this was the hunting ground of the Awanitshi Indians. In bygone times the Indians called today's Bridal Veil Fall, 'Pohono', The Spirit of the Wind. The name is most apt because the water is continuously forced away from the rock walls and the height of the waterfall is equivalent to around sixty-two storeys. In the northern more inaccessible sections of the park the cold and clear water of the streams flows into the Tuolmne River. The source of the water that travels into the Merced River is a combination of several creeks that are located in the three thousand metre high alpine regions of both the Cathedral and Clarke Mountain Ranges. The park's prehistoric Mammoth Trees are truly gigantic and their trunks can reach a diameter of nearly ten metres and a height of up to seventy. The mighty trees are real natural wonders and are even protected from fire by their fifty centimetre thick bark. Strong tan acids prevent insects from attacking the wood and it's not uncommon to come across trees that are a thousand years old. Yosemite is a truly splendid example of enchanting natural scenery with all the magnificence and artistry of water, gentle, powerful and at its most captivating.

NPM-DVD-114 - Nature Parks ROYAL CHITWAN PARK Nepal On the Indian border in the south of Nepal is the country's oldest animal reserve, the Royal Chitwan Park. Along with the extremely rare Indian rhinoceros around four hundred animals live within the confines of this fascinating nature reserve. One of the park's fertile valleys is crossed by the rivers Rapti, Reu and Narayani. Due to the monsoons the rivers frequently change course and constantly transform the appearance of the landscape. The rivers are home to a large assortment of fish. Even the rare Ganges Dolphin that is threatened by extinction has found sanctuary in their waters. An area of 932 km² is encircled by the impressive profile of the mighty and majestic Himalayan Mountains and in 1973 the Royal Chitwan was officially designated as a national park. Today it is one of the country's most important tourist destinations. More than seventy per cent of the park is covered by forests of Sal trees, the remainder being divided between river valley woodland and tall elephant grass. With its 800 metre high hills, the park accommodates more than forty species of mammals, around five hundred and fifty varieties of birds and seventy species of butterflies. The subtropical climate also supports the growth of numerous exotic plants, the magnificent blossoms of which are often obscured by dense undergrowth. The name 'Chitwan' means 'Heart Of The Jungle', a name that could not better describe the large variety of fauna and flora to be found in the park. A slow drive on bumpy, natural roads travels past the tall trees of the jungle. From the top of the trees there is the screaming of monkeys as well as a confusing cacophony of birdcall. The park is a paradise for birds and among the four hundred and fifty species that live here there are rare hornbills, cranes, peacocks and birds of prey such as falcons, hawks and white-tailed eagles. The Royal Chitwan was once the hunting ground of kings and noblemen. Today it is the most treasured nature reserve in Asia and a final refuge for numerous animals threatened by extinction.

NPM-DVD-113 - The Grand Canyon National Park is the most beautiful and well-known nature reserve in the USA, its 5000 square kilometres covering more than four different climatic zones and rising to 2200 metres above sea level. The Grand Canyon is also Indian Territory, the Navajo, Hopi and Havasuapi Indians still inhabit this region. Neatly piled one above the other, the Grand Canyon feautes twelve geological layers of various time periods. Its time-span ranges from the fossil rich 250 million year old limestone of the Kaibab Plateau to the almost two million year old Vishu slate at the bottom of the ravine. The Colorado River created this natural masterpiece in less than ten million years with severe heat and extreme cold eroding the rock, followed by rainfall that drove it down into a mighty river. Up to 1600 metres deep and averaging 16 kilometres wide, the incredible dimensions of this huge abyss are difficult to comprehend, the descent into the canyon being like a journey into the Earth's distant past. The rays of the sun make the geological strata appear brown from above and green and blue from below. The cream-coloured strata in the upper parts of the valley walls contain fossils of sponges, corals, snails and crustaceans. The beige-coloured sandstone contains fish skeletons and in the purple limestone there are the impressions of water lilies and primitive crustaceans, with green slate revealing traces of mussels and worms. At the bottom of the canyon there are no further signs of life, only dark slate that is nearly two billion years old, interspersed with grainy pink granite. There is almost nowhere else in the world where the layman is provided with such a rich and comprehensive insight to the history of the formation of the Earth's geological layers created during the course of the past two billion years.
