Here is Phil Ochs and Jim Glover as they appeared on the Midnight Special from April 19, 1974. In this clip they perform the Ochs classic Power and the Glory. Power and Glory was also recorded by Anita Bryant. The other song that was done that night was Changes. I have much more super rare Phil Ochs items, both audio and video. Please contact me if you have any rare Ochs material to trade.

On May 28, 1976, at the Felt Forum in New York City, a memorial concert was held in honor of Phil Ochs who had committed suicide on April 9, 1976. Eric Andersen performs his classic song Thirsty Boots with great poignancy, it is quite touching. Other performers at the Memorial Concert included Pat Sky, Dave Van Ronk, Melanie, Bob Gibson, Jim Glover, Oscar Brand,Tim Hardin, and Peter Seeger. The concert was five and a half hours long but only 90 minutes was shown on public television in 1977. As I watched and listened to the various performances, I couldn't help but feel a sadness, not only for Phil Ochs, but due to the loving tributes from these performers who truly played their hearts out. The musicians were truly sincere in their respect and admiration for Ochs. What a difference from the superficiality of most tributes for musicians today!

Here's to the state of Mississippi, For Underheath her borders, the devil draws no lines, If you drag her muddy river, nameless bodies you will find. Whoa the fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes, The calender is lyin' when it reads the present time. Whoa here's to the land you've torn out the heart of, Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of! Here's to the people of Mississippi Who say the folks up north, they just don't understand And they tremble in their shadows at the thunder of the Klan The sweating of their souls can't wash the blood from off their hands They smile and shrug their shoulders at the murder of a man Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of Here's to the schools of Mississippi Where they're teaching all the children that they don't have to care All of rudiments of hatred are present everywhere And every single classroom is a factory of despair There's nobody learning such a foreign word as fair Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of Here's to the cops of Mississippi They're chewing their tobacco as they lock the prison door Their bellies bounce inside them as they knock you to the floor No they don't like taking prisoners in their private little war Behind their broken badges there are murderers and more Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of And, here's to the judges of Mississippi Who wear the robe of honor as they crawl into the court They're guarding all the bastions with their phony legal fort Oh, justice is a stranger when the prisoners report When the black man stands accused the trial is always short Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of And here's to the government of Mississippi In the swamp of their bureaucracy they're always bogging down And criminals are posing as the mayors of the towns They're hoping that no one sees the sights and hears the sounds And the speeches of the governor are the ravings of a clown Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of And here's to the laws of Mississippi Congressmen will gather in a circus of delay While the Constitution is drowning in an ocean of decay Unwed mothers should be sterilized, I've even heard them say Yes, corruption can be classic in the Mississippi way Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of And here's to the churches of Mississippi Where the cross, once made of silver, now is caked with rust And the Sunday morning sermons pander to their lust The fallen face of Jesus is choking in the dust Heaven only knows in which God they can trust Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of

An arrangement of a poem by Alfred Noyes. Phil Ochs was a lead player in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960's as very powerful songwriter and voice. Sorry, like many of my off-air recordings the beginning is clipped.

Cousin of legendary folk singer Phil Ochs, Max Ochs is an amazing singer/songwriter who keeps the American folk tradition alive today. He came to our AP Literature class on 9/26/2007 to discuss the history of the oral tradition and play us a few tunes. Max has been involved in the American folk scene for many years and was friends with the likes of John Fahey, Mississippi John Hurt, and Elizabeth Cotton.

Musician, radio host and filmmaker Dave von Kleist sings a Phil Ochs song at the Common Cause Medical Research Foundation's 9th annual conference, Sudbury, Ontario Aug 30 2008. Ochs' song captures the induced paranoia of the late 50s and 60s which turned everything into a suspected threat, and thus to preemptively cripple it, destroy it. Dave von Kleist concludes the song with a rif on the 'peace movement' -- a 'peace movement' crippled, incidentally, by its unwillingness/inability to examine its government's most egregious crimes against its purportedly own people ("itself"), e.g. assassinations, false flag operations, self-inflicted wounds, chemical, biological and nuclear warfare (chemtrails, mycoplasmas, DU), and continued obeisance to Israel. Dave von Kleist is co-host of THE POWER HOUR on radio.

Oh I marched to the battle of New Orleans At the end of the early British war The young land started growing The young blood started flowing But I ain't marchin' anymore For I've killed my share of Indians In a thousand different fights I was there at the Little Big Horn I heard many men lying I saw many more dying But I ain't marchin' anymore It's always the old to lead us to the war It's always the young to fall Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun Tell me is it worth it all For I stole California from the Mexican land Fought in the bloody Civil War Yes I even killed my brothers And so many others But I ain't marchin' anymore For I marched to the battles of the German trench In a war that was bound to end all wars Oh I must have killed a million men And now they want me back again But I ain't marchin' anymore For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky Set off the mighty mushroom roar When I saw the cities burning I knew that I was learning That I ain't marchin' anymore Now the labor leader's screamin' when they close the missile plants, United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore, Call it "Peace" or call it "Treason," Call it "Love" or call it "Reason," But I ain't marchin' any more, No I ain't marchin' any more Visit my official website! http://www.listentoliliana.com Add me on your other social apps! Short clip of Phil Ochs performing "I Ain't Marching Anymore" from one of two PBS shows: Berkeley in the Sixties and/or Making Sense of the Sixties. Not sure which one exactly, and not sure of the year exactly either.

Here is some old footage I had taped off of TV back in the early 1980s. It is a brief special remembering the great folk singer Phil Ochs. Michael Ochs is interviewed and Jim Glover performs at a Phil Ochs song night at Folk City.

Of all the protest singers who emerged from the Greenwich Village scene of New York City in the early 1960s, few -then or in retrospective - were as genuine or as committed as Phil Ochs. Ochs may have been in the shadow of another Mid Western boy, but his songs stand up to the comparison and many are as relevant today as when he wrote them. While others sought the hit parade, Ochs stayed true to his beliefs, singing on the university campuses and on the protest marches. To a degree this denied him the widepsread popularity others chased, which at times frustrated him. As Tom Paxton put it: Ochs believed he was next in line - and then he died. Chords of Fame; the theme song for a heroic but ultimately tragic story.
