The Marvelettes were an American singing girl group on the Motown label. Motown's first successful female vocal group, the Marvelettes are most notable for recording the label's first US #1 pop hit, "Please Mr. Postman", and for setting the precedent for later Motown girl groups such as Martha and the Vandellas and The Supremes. "You Really Got Me" is a rock song written by Ray Davies and performed by his band, The Kinks. It was released as the group's third single, in August 1964, and reached Number 1 on the UK singles chart the following month, staying there for two weeks. It was the group's breakthrough hit, and established them as one of the top British Invasion acts in the United States, reaching Number 7 there later in the year. It was later included on the Kinks' debut album, The Kinks. "You Really Got Me" was the first hit song built around power chords (parallel 5ths and octaves), and was heavily influential on later rock and roll musicians, particularly in the heavy metal genre. One critic wrote that it is, "the track which invented heavy metal" while critic Denise Sullivan of Allmusic writes, "'You Really Got Me' remains a blueprint song in the hard rock and heavy metal arsenal." The Guitar riffs were played by Ray's brother Dave.

I wonder where Austin Powers got his inspiration from? The Troggs formed in 1964 and were signed by the manager of The Kinks, Larry Page in 1965. Their most famous hit was the single "Wild Thing" (written by Chip Taylor), which with the help of television exposure on Thank Your Lucky Stars reached number 2 in the UK and number 1 in the United States in June 1966. Its combination of a simple heavy guitar riff and flirtatious lyrics helped it to quickly become a garage rock standard. It was recorded in one complete take (take two) at Olympic Studios in London, with Keith Grant engineering. The band's success in the US was also limited by not touring there until 1968.

The Dalai Lama came to Nottingham to teach and so as is usual - Chinese Students came to protest. A quite unique protest where the antagonists were debating the weather with the protaganists. Notice also the one solitary "Bobby" keeping an eye out for any troublemakers. This was filmed spontaniously on my Nokia N95 mobile phone. Maybe future G8 protesters might take note?

Traffic was an English rock band from Birmingham, formed in 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. They began as a psychedelic rock group influenced by The Beatles when releasing early pop singles, and diversified their sound through the use of instruments such as keyboards, reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music. Here they are performing "40,000 Headmen" live in a TV studio.

One Day Clifford T Ward will be mentioned in the same breath as Rupert Brook and Dylan Thomas for he is as quintisentially British and poetic as they were. Like them too his life is tinged with the great sadness of unfullfilled promise and was ended far too soon. He was loved. This song Gaye marks the first time he came to the attention of the masses. It's a beautiful song but by no means his best. In a Nationwide BBC poll of the best British songs of the past 50 years his song "Home Thoughts from Abroad" came in at Number 4! Amazing when you realise that it wasn't even a hit single, all the more amazing when you realise how relatively undiscovered he still remains.
