November 2008 Polluters BP and Shell are pioneering the cap and trade system to cut carbon emissions. Yet does it help the environment or is it just a money making tool? Plans are underway to move the system to Australia. So what is cap and trade? Businesses releasing greenhouse gases are issued carbon credits. A cap level is then set, to control the output of emissions. Companies under their cap limit can trade in their excess credits for a tidy sum. Polluters are forced to buy expensive extra credits. Yet some remain offended by this capitalistic style trade-off. People forget that the real business should be about reducing emissions, not making money, says environmentalist Kevin Smith. Even the EUs environment spokeswoman Barbara Helfferich admits many abuse the system, accusing power companies of making windfall profits. So why should Australia adopt this seemingly flawed system? Australia should look at the lessons learned in Europe and the mistakes that have been made here, warns Climate Action spokesman Tomas Wyns.

November 2008 General Martin Luther Agwais job is difficult - keep the peace in war-ravaged Darfur. But recently a new problem has presented itself the government-backed janjaweed has started targeting peacekeepers. Patrolling the vast, barren wastelands of West Sudan, General Agwais troops tread an uneasy line between rebels and government forces. His task is to prevent the violence that has already killed 300,000 civilians and threatens to engulf Sudan in civil war. The General is head of the UN-led African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur. But presently in Darfur there is no peace to keep, says General Agwai dryly. That makes our job difficult. The situation for the peacekeepers is deteriorating. Were now being targeted, Agwai tells us. In July this year peacekeeping forces were attacked in a brutal and highly organised way. Agwai believes that the government-backed Janjaweed were behind the attack. So does the UN. In peace talks Agwais forces are criticised by both the rebels and the government but Agwai points out that talking is preferable to fighting. I love it when I hear everyone criticising us, he says cheerfully. That means we are neutral. An impressive account of courage under fire.

November 2008 PNG is one of the most hazardous flying environments in the world. Recent years have seen a disturbing number of crashes. All were poorly investigated due to corruption and lack of resources. Safety standards have fallen off the edge. Air investigator Sydney OToole is concerned about PNGs inadequate aviation safety systems. In the past seven years, 19 crashes have never been looked into properly. The crash of Patrick Kundins plane eighteen months ago is a prime example of the systems breakdown. OToole believes that due process was not allowed to take place. The wreckage was plundered and the recordings of the crews distress calls were wiped out. With no legal framework to back them up, investigators are powerless: We have no legal mandate to do anything. We cant do a damn thing.

November 2008 In the harsh conditions of Sao Paolo, graffiti artists are pushing street art in new and often dangerous directions. We investigate these artists work, amongst pools of filth and armies of cockroaches. Sao Paulo's art movement sometimes goes beyond the streets and into the citys sewers. This is a rainwater gallery in the sewage system, tells artist Zezao. Whilst some street artists are being tempted into top art galleries, some still find their home streets inspirational. I imagine that in a different city where problems are more subtle I would not have the same inspiration to create, a local artist explains.

Here she sings two songs for the small male-dominated crowd: the first has a sad and haunting tone and the next has a livelier feel. The footage is taken from the iconic film: 'Have you seen Drum Lately?', dubbed one of the most important films to emerge from apartheid South Africa and filmed by the father of South African photography: Jürgen Schadeberg.
